The PT 4 Allure pheromone traps are designed to attract and capture stored product insects through the controlled release of pheromones. Pheromones are chemical substances produced by organisms to communicate with other members of the same species, indicating when to mate, aggregate, or avoid danger. The Allure traps provide an economical and simplified approach to the inspection process, while also serving as excellent evaluation tools to determine the effectiveness of insecticide applications.
These traps can be strategically placed throughout food processing plants, warehouses, and other food processing facilities where stored product insect infestations are suspected. They can also be used in domestic kitchens and pantries to detect and trap stored product pests. The target pests for these traps include Indian Meal Moths, Almond Moths, Tobacco Moths, Raisin Moths, and Mediterranean Flour Moths, which can thrive on a variety of food items such as whole wheat or graham flour, corn-meal, shelled or ear corn, broken grain and grain products, dried fruits, seeds, crackers, biscuits, nuts, powdered milk, chocolate, candy, red peppers, dog food, tobacco, and cocoa beans.
The Moth Trap Assembly Instructions are straightforward: 1) Grasp the top and bottom of the trap and pull it apart, then fold the perforated ends inward to create a three-dimensional shape; 2) Peel off the paper covering the adhesive on the back of the pheromone packet, taking care not to touch the packet membrane surface with fingers, and place the pheromone packet inside the top of the trap.
The traps work by luring the male PT 4 Allure moths with the pheromone (sex) lure, which then attracts the female moths to the trap. To prolong the storage life of the unused pheromone packets, it is recommended to refrigerate or freeze them. When handling the packets, it is essential to use tweezers or rubber gloves to avoid contamination, especially if traps for more than one insect species are being prepared. The packet's membrane should not be damaged by stapling, pinning, or nailing, and it should not be peeled apart.
To find infestations within a facility, the traps can be moved from uninfested areas to the area where moths have been captured, increasing the trap density to as much as one trap per 9,000 cubic feet. Careful inspection of the area with the maximum trap catch should reveal the source of the infestation. For mass trapping, trap densities of one or more traps per 3,000 cubic feet can be used, depending on the size of the moth population. Traps should be inspected weekly, and any insects and debris should be removed. The trap should be replaced if insects, dust, or debris reduce its stickiness.
